Project Update/Weekly Summary-Week 13-More than I can chew?
You know, I can see why Professor Bond recommended for this to be a group project…
So, for these past 2 weeks, since I am counting the 16th-29th, I, like everyone else, have been working on my final project. This hasn’t followed the pattern of easy week-hard week, as last week was frustrating, and this week was hard! At the beginning of the week, I was definitely very worried and stressed about everything I had to get done. I feel a bit better about where I stand, but still, it’s not going to be easy!
So, for the final project, I want to basically recreate my semester of DS106 but with my character. Using a Google map, she’ll go to the places that I made assignments for, in roughly the same sequence that I made those assignments. For example, she’d go visit Australia to look for the bunyip, and then would go to Mexico to look for the chupacabra, as I made assignments about those cryptids and in that order. It’d be a nice way to tie everything I’ve made and done for this class into the final project. I’ll make new media for each of those places. I may also use old assignments, such as pictures, that I made to supplement my new media.
Basically, it’s a StoryMap with video, design, web, and audio assignments that has the text on each slide that goes along with the assignments and gives a context to each of them, as well as tells the narrative arc of each general section (sections aren’t labeled, but for example, the European Trip is a section) and the overall story. In order to make sure that I do enough to warrant 30 stars, I am basing what I make an assignments from the assignment bank. However, as you’ll see, I can’t say that they are exactly like the prompts say!
Unlike past weekly summaries, I am not going to mention every single day, as I didn’t work every day, and there’s no daily creates to mention.
Also, I am not going to have separate blog posts for each of my assignments, so they’ll all go here. This is going to be an extremely long post. I guess that makes sense, as this is for the final project! Feel free to just scroll down to the bottom, if you just want the project update.
Friday 11/16
I read the weekly summary and immediately thought of this idea. I looked at all of my assignments and started to think about how I was going to do this.
Saturday 11/17
I didn’t do anything-I couldn’t figure out how to phrase my idea to ask Professor Bond to make sure that it would be okay.
Sunday 11/18
I emailed Professor Bond with my idea, using almost the same wording as above (I actually copy-pasted that into this post, and then reworded it to change all of the questions to declarative sentences). I said it was okay and gave me some options that I could use to make my story-Spreadsheet Mapper (https://www.google.com/earth/outreach/learn/mapping-from-a-google-spreadsheet/) or StoryMap JS (https://storymap.knightlab.com/). I looked at Spreadsheet Mapper and it seemed complicated, so I went with StoryMap. I experimented with StoryMapper and I found that I liked it better than creating a Google map, like I had done before, as this created a story that people could easier follow, and it worked with SoundCloud.
Monday 11/19
I looked at all of my posts and decided on which ones I wanted to do. Mainly, they were ones that already had locations, such as the bunyip and Australia. I ignored the weekly summaries, as they just summarized the other assignments, and assignments such as the one where we had to talk about our photography experience, since that wasn’t relevant to my character nor had a location.
I then created an excel and copy-pasted the URLs of those assignments, as well as the dates that I made them and the locations attached to them.
Tuesday 11/20-Saturday 11/24
At some point during the week, I color-coded the assignments to better figure out how much she would have to get on an airline, since too much would be unrealistic.
I also made took the color-coded sheet, copy-pasted it to a new sheet, and then took out all of the UMW-related posts, as those are more specific to me than to my character Maria, who has no real connection to UMW. Again, this may have been Monday or Tuesday.
Finally, I had to sort the assignments. At that point, I had 58 assignments. I wanted to make some sort of groupings each with their own narrative arcs (in a way) so that it wouldn’t be too overwhelming and would make more sense. This was SOOOOO hard to do! I didn’t want to move any of the assignments around to different places, as that would mess up the dates as well as mess up my idea of having her copy my exact (or close to exact) semester. Eventually, though, I had to. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been as much sense and it would be constant flying across the ocean or across the continent.
Sunday 11/25
Sunday, I finally started the actual StoryMap for this assignment, I made slides for each of the different locations and put the dates and the locations as the titles for each. It ended up being 35 slides, as I hadn’t used all of the 58 assignments. Some, like the radio show assignments, I consolidated into one of her trips to Australia as that is what my radio show was on. For 19/35 slides, so a little over half, I started to write the text explaining the story. However, with some of the places- Northern Ireland, Italy, Ukraine, Croatia, and Romania-I didn’t have any exact location or reason for her being there, as my assignments dealt with things that were connected to the countries, such as the strigoi and Romania, but didn’t have any specific location, or were more personal to me, like the reasoning and places that I want to visit in Italy.
Monday 11/19
On Monday, I started to work on the assignments.
First, I did my first audio assignment. It was actually the first thing I thought up to do. I based it off of this-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/make-noise-from-a-normal-sample/. I wanted to make a chupacabra sound. So, I went on Freesound.org and searched through coyote calls/howls, as “chupacabras” tend to be coyotes with mange, bat sounds, as they suck blood like vampire bats, though I couldn’t find a vampire bat call, and then some Mexican outdoor ambiance sounds (I eventually used crickets recorded in Mexico). I didn’t find a bat call I liked, so I googled and eventually found http://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/research/behaviour/batlab/downloads/echolocation/. Though British bats, at least I knew these were bats! I then listened to all the recordings and found what I thought was the mos unusual, least sweet call. I then uploaded the three sounds I chose into Audacity. I repeated and reversed the bat call to make it the opening and closing of the chupacabra call, and then added the coyote call into the middle. I had to increase the audio of that to better match the the bat call, and added some effects to make it sound spookier. I also added the cricket sounds and viola-chupacabra call!
Then, I decided to make a travel itinerary (travel schedule), based off of this assignment-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/travel-far-far-away/. This was worth 4.5 stars, the most out of any of them I have done so far, and yeah, it was definitely the hardest! Why, you may ask? Well, it was for the European trip Maria did, and as I stated before, I didn’t have the exact locations for any of them yet. So, I had to figure those out. I also had to figure out timing, as I was basing it off of the timing I already put into StoryMap, but I had to put down when she’d leave, not when she’d be there. I also had to figure out flight duration, the best airports for her to use, etc. Did I have to be as annoyingly accurate-no. Why? I apparently can’t not be. Anyway, I used a template I found on Word, but I changed “Destination address” to “After Arrival Destination” as it didn’t make a lot of sense in context of her just flying to airport, and same with phone number, which I changed to Transpiration after arrival. I also moved “Travel time” to after “Arrival time” as that made more sense to me. For the flight #s, I used dates from whatever she was going there for. I used flight #565 for Scotland because legend has it that Saint Columba banished the Loch Ness monster, or a monster in the vicinity of Loch Ness, in that year. I based the assignment that I did on that story, so here I referenced it, in a way. I used flight #1720 for Marseille, because that is when the Great Plague of Marseille started, and that is what my assignment was based off of. I had to figure out what the heck Maria was going to do in Italy, and I stumbled upon the Lariosauro, as I was trying to go with the theme of lake monster, following Nessie. The first sighting listed was in 1946, so the flight became flight #1946. For Kraków, I used the median of the date range for the series books of Polish history that first mention the Wawel Dragon, which was the topic of the assignment that I made. The date range is between 1190 and 1208 CE, so flight #1199 it is! I had to figure out what I wanted to do with Ukraine, as unlike me, Maria has no ancestry there. I went with the water monster theme, and stumbled upon this-https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2016/06/strange-monsters-and-mysteries-of-ukraine/. It’s not the type of site I normally use, but other websites (also not Wikipedia or academic) mention it, and I couldn’t find anything else. Even folklore was hard to find. I decided that I could contrast a legitimate legend with more of an urban legend, or not-yet legitimate legend, so I figured it was OK. It is flight #6616, as the article was written June 6th, 2016. Finally, I used flight #1991 for Ukraine back to D.C. as the U.S. first recognized Ukraine as independent in 1991.
To figure out which airport to use, I had to use google and google maps to find the airports and see which one was closest! I also used https://www.mapsofworld.com/international-airports/europe/uk.html. I also used http://lakecomotravel.com/how-to-get-to-lake-como/ and http://www.krakow-info.com/transpor.htm to figure out transportation after the airport.
I also used Google Flights to figure out timing, since I didn’t know how long the flights would last, nor the time zones, and quite frankly, my brain has trouble figuring that stuff out! For example, here is from Brisbane to Inverness.
During this research, I also figured out Maria was going to go in Northern Ireland. I had trouble finding cryptids from Northern Ireland, and other folklore, as many of the real places mentioned or thought to be in Irish folklore are in the Republic of Ireland. However, I did find the Ring of Gullion, which has folklore connected to it. For the StoryMap, I placed the marker at Slieve Gullion, the supposed location of some of the myths.
Finally, I did do it though!
While not applicable to this assignment, I also figured out that I wanted Maria to go to Kringa, Croatia, the home of the first historically real person who was thought to be a vampire named Jure Grando. I used this legend for an assignment, so Maria went there.
Tuesday 11/27
On Tuesday, I created my third assignment, which was making a business card, which was this assignment-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/create-your-own-business-card/. I had already made a business card for Maria, but I decided to make a special one for the event Maria handed them out at-a lecture about dragons and Anglo-Saxons. I chose to do Cambridge University, as there is undergraduate study there about the Anglo-Saxons, Norse, and Celts and that popped up first when I googled it. So, I used Canva, like I did previously. I liked the font, font locations, and wording of my previous card, and as its can a special card made for the event, I figured she would just update her old one. So, I duplicated the front and back. I used Cambridge blue, as she was at Cambridge, and let’s just pretend they let her use it, even if she does’t work for the university! It’s to connect and make the students feel more connected and welcomed. I used Canva’s equivalent of Arial font, as that is what Cambridge uses. I found “free for reuse”/public domain picture that had both of the two dragons-the Welsh Dragon and the White Dragon-on it and replaced the other picture with that. I deleted the square/box line thing and replaced it with a curly line, that looked for fancy like a fancy place like Cambridge. I made it brown, as I said before, brown reminds me of Maria, and it goes with the browns on the front. I deleted the globe, as it no longer fit theme-wise or space-wise. I then added the dragons.
The red dragon was easy, as the rest of the picture was transparent. However, I had to modify the picture of the white one to make it transparent, which was harder than it should have been. The tail didn’t let me just use the magic wand tool in Paint.net, so I had to do it by hand.
After, I added the border, which I thought made it fancier and more professional, and it was done!

I then got to work on my three videos for the “Rocky Road to Dublin” part of the European trip, each based off of this assignment-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/its-vacation-time/. This entailed me downloading Celtic Thunder YouTube video with 4K Video Downloader, using https://online-audio-converter.com/ to convert it to just an audio file, then uploading it to Audacity. I then made three separate audio files-one of just the first parts where they sing of Tuam, Mullingar, and Dublin, one that mentioned Holyhead, and one that mentioned Liverpool. I had to decide where I wanted to cut off each part (before or after the chorus, etc.).
I then made a video using the Microsoft Photos app. I found images on Google that were “free to reuse” and uploaded them along with the song. Holyhead and Liverpool were simple, but with the Ireland video I wanted to make sure that the pictures and towns/cities matched with the music.

Wednesday
On Wednesday, I did my fifth assignment, which was making a collage of places in Fredericksburg that is connected to George Washington. The assignment that I based this off of-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/what-are-you-missing-nearby/-was about places near you, as while this is not particularly near D.C. it is near me (when I’m at UMW. I live in Arlington, near D.C.). I used George Washington because earlier in the semester I made an assignment that had Mount Vernon and George and Martha Washington, and thus Maria went to Mount Vernon, so I decided to tie this in with that. I found the locations I wanted to use, used Google to find “free to reuse” images, and then used https://www.befunky.com/create/collage/, which I used in the past, to create the collage. The hardest part was getting the text in, with the right size and color. The color part I really struggled with. I tried to make it legible as possible, though still with a fancy, old-timey font. I think it turned out OK!

I also created sticky notes-this assignment http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/post-it-notes-and-grocery-lists/-for part of this final project. I already made sticky notes for her earlier this semester, but I wanted to make new ones based on the events of this project. I chose the sticky notes to be on one of the slides for Washington, D.C. as that is when she has downtime and is at home for a while. I first looked at what she doing while she was in D.C. and NOVA, and what was coming up, and put those 6 items into a list in Word. I would then make the text red when I finished that sticky note.
I used Paint.net and as the assignment said, I made little squares of colors. I learned from last time and used the same colors as the interiors to first draw the borders, as a yellow sticky note wouldn’t have a blue, as mine did last time. I then had to fill each of these in. For whatever reason, that was easier said than done! I also added a seventh sticky note, as I had her have a quote on a sticky note last time, as I wanted her to still have that note, as it’s not a grocery list that will be thrown out after it’s been used and it’s a quite that I like. I tried to recreate that sticky note the best I could, but reversed, as different letters and words are covered up this time. The background is brown, as I didn’t want it to just be white and maybe the notes are on her brown desk or paneled walls or something.
Thursday
On Thursday, I did my seventh assignment. It was based off of this assignment-http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/where-do-you-want-to-go/-on where you want to go. This is one where I kind of bent the rules, as this obviously was make AFTER Maria went to a place. However, she went to a place where she had always wanted to go, so it kind of counts, right? Anyways, I wanted to do something with either Kringa, Croatia or Somyne Lake, Ukraine, as at that point I didn’t have anything for them or any of the slides closely before ir after. Neither had many pictures on Google that were “labeled for reuse” so I decided: why not take snippings of Google Street View. So that’s what I did. I did a first run through. However, the pictures were all different sizes, which looked weird in the video and wouldn’t be accurate, since she’d use the same camera. So, I redid it and made sure to make them the same size, using the various tool on Street View, as well as my bookmarks at the top, to mark where to place and drag the snipping rectangle. I then placed them into the Microsoft Photos app and arranged them. I then added the text at the beginning explaining the story, using the same plain black picture to put the text on that I have used for almost the entire semester. I then found music on the YouTube Audio Library and the Croatian National Anthem on the CIA World Factbook website and combined them together in Audacity. I cut the music down to the length to match until the pictures start. I faded the music out and the anthem in to try and make them not sound so disjointed.
Afterwards, I freaked out about copyright, make sure to tell in the video where the pictures came from, even if it creaks the illusion that Maria made it, and hope for the best. Google, please don’t copystrike me!

On Thursday, I also started to write this post, since I knew that it would take me some time to right it.
Friday
I did all of the citations, uploaded the videos to YouTube, and finished and turned in this post!
Overall, these two weeks were stressful, though I do feel like I accomplished a lot. I was stressed so much Monday 11/26 about getting enough done. However, I feel good about my place right now. At this point, I know that not all of the 35 slides will have assignments. I don’t have the time, energy, patience, or will to do that! However, I will try and see how many I can do. So far, I have 9/35 slides done. I have done 7 different assignments, but one of them I did 3 times. Star-wise, I have done 25 stars of individual assignments, but counting the 3 Ireland videos, which are all the same assignment but three different videos, I have done 31 stars. Here’s a video of my StoryMap so far. It’s won’t be a video for the final project, just a StoryMap, but I made a video here just to be able to show this StoryMap without publishing it.
The biggest challenge so far is trying to figure out how to do citations/references, since technically there shouldn’t be any, as these are all Maria’s pictures. With the YouTube videos and the SoundCloud audio files, they’ll just be in the description. However, for everything else, I don’t know. I’ll figure something out (I hope!)
What’s next? More assignments! I also need to write/finish writing the text on all of the slides. For those slides that I don’t create content for, I will still find a “labeled for reuse” picture of the place to put there, so that way it’s not blank. However, that will be done last, as I am going to wait and see how much I can accomplish. Stay tuned for next week and another sure-to-be-long post!
P.S. I didn’t want to post any of the finished assignments here-you have to go to the finished StoryMap to see them! However, the videos are on YouTube if you want to watch them beforehand.
